Madeira 08/2021

To say it beforehand: Our trip to Madeira was incredible and I’m eager to go right back while writing this right now. But let’s start slowly with all the information I still remember :) I remember that we already had a hard time before flying. On the day of our flight Deutsche Bahn workers decided to strike. My dad had to take a day off to drive us to the airport, thanks a lot to him. Another issue was that it was impossible to rent a car there because we took care of it way too late. Luckily one company had one motorcycle for a couple of days and so we had to be content with that one.

After landing in Madeira though our fears and tears disappeared and the joy came out of our inner bodies. Madeira is an Island from Portugal and not that big but there is definitely a lot to see. Our hotel was in Santa Cruz which is close to the airport. We arrived in the afternoon and after checking in we explored the small village and had some great dinner at Taberno do Patisco which was our main restaurant for the trip. Santa Cruz already had those vacation vibes with the sea, the palm trees and the warm filter over our sunglasses but with a scooter the island seems even more enjoyable and adventurous.

We picked up the scooter on the next day in Funchal and took trips all around the island. After taking the highway for one or two times we switched to normal roads because it was quite dangerous with cars and their speed on the highway. So taking the casual streets took us longer but we also saw the diversity of the citizens, their houses and Madeira’s nature. It was beautiful and I actually want to experience that feeling right now again. We have been to the different coasts with great views for example at Cristo Rei. We have been to the Ponta de Sao Lorenzo, the cliff which you reach in the north after hiking for about 2 hours and so many more different viewpoints. But the highlight was reaching the Pico do Arieiro, one of the highest mountains in Madeira where we saw one of the most ridiculous amazing sunsets. The way back to the hotel from the mountain was scary though because it got dark and the roads to Santa Cruz were literally going extremely downhill all the time but it was definitely worth the risk in my opinion 😅. We also had the luck to celebrate my gf’s birthday and as she wished we relaxed for the whole day at the beach and in Funchal. As a result we both got bad sunburns which can still be seen till this date 😝. Nevertheless every day was a good day in Madeira with nice weather and good food.

For the last couple of days we sadly didn‘t have any transportation, so that we had to use the bus and also booked some local tours. One was packed for a full day on the jeep which took us through crazy adventurous roads in the middle of the forest but also through the smallest alleys in villages. With the tours we came across the natural lava pools in Porto Moniz, were on the Cabo Girão Skywalk, drove through the Anjos Waterfall and also went swimming at the Risco Waterfall. That was so much fun and exciting stuff to do in Madeira. I’m really pleased with our stay there. All the people were so kind and helpful, the landscape is amazing and we also were lucky with the weather all week long. So thanks for the memories. Also thanks to my girlfriend who joined me during this trip. Hopefully she had a great time too although she complained that we woke up so early every day and everything was so exhausting 😅. Nah, I’m sure she will look back to the trip in a very good way. :) Last but not least, you can find a picture with me and Cristiano Ronaldo haha.
